From Campus to Workplace: How AI is Reshaping Media Jobs?
On October 20, 2024, Sheng Qina, President of the Macao Internet Research Association, explained the 'Application of AI in Media Work' to over 100 students from 24 schools participating in the 'Campus Reporter Program' class.
President Sheng stated that in the past two years, generative AI has been actively applied across various industries, showcasing its enormous potential. She pointed out that generative AI plays a crucial role in the development and operation of the media industry, with applications including information gathering and organization, data searching, transcript preparation, image and video generation, translation, as well as generating, proofreading, and compliance checking of press releases and reports.
During the class, President Sheng introduced several common generative AI tools, including the renowned conversational AI - ChatGPT, the domestic large model Kimi, the AI-driven search engine Perplexity, the image generation tool Midjourney, and the video generation model Kelig, broadening the students' perspectives and providing a deeper understanding of the applications of generative AI.
She also introduced two locally developed AI practical tools that can effectively assist media work. The first is a knowledge-based search website (https://www.ersinfotech.com), which can search and generate organized answers from the internet in real-time, particularly suitable for querying local information in Macao. The second is an AI writing assistant (https://www.gptcat.ai) driven by artificial intelligence and a rich local database, which features functions such as rapid copy generation, translation, voice-to-text conversion, verification, and data analysis. This tool can safely and compliantly conduct writing and proofreading using the local database, generating high-quality textual content in just seconds, thus saving over 90% of writing and proofreading time.
President Sheng indicated that AI can become a valuable tool for media workers, who need to possess the judgment skills to analyze AI-generated content, as well as mastery of AI application techniques, to maximize the use of these tools and improve media work efficiency.
The 'Campus Reporter Program' is co-hosted by the Education and Youth Development Bureau, the Macao Journalists Association, and the Macao Sports Journalists Association. Through training, visits, and practical experience, it helps participants understand the latest developments, operations, and characteristics of the media industry.
